Development Plan Promotes Queensland Arts
The Queensland government has long supported the state’s impressive range of unique arts and crafts, from gorgeous traditional Maori clothing to old-fashioned radio theater and high-tech digital stories. Today, vibrant artistic communities are becoming even stronger and more sustainable as a number of factors combine. The state’s population is rapidly expanding, allowing significant niche communities of artists and investors to emerge. At the same time, an updated information economy is providing the high-tech computer infrastructure needed to help develop and promote creative intellectual property. The 2010-2012 Industry Sector Development Plan for Arts Queensland supports expanded use of the state’s high-tech infrastructure to fortify connections among artists and investors.
The 2010-2012 plan continues a long-range strategy to promote local art. Since 2000, when the Millennium Arts Regional Program was launched, the state has funded 20 centers for the arts and culture across Queensland. A highlight is the Queensland Cultural Centre in Brisbane, which includes a refurbished state library and Australia’s largest Gallery of Modern Art. Some other Millennium Arts projects include a new venue for the Queensland Theatre Company in South Brisbane, a new Centre for Contemporary Arts far north in Cairns, and a new cultural centre to support artists in Hope Vale.
